I must admit that I am very much enjoying flying my DJI Phantom 3 drone – I didn’t realise just how much I missed my old Phantom Vision 2!
The challenge for me is to get a new perspective on my favourite in-shore snorkelling and diving sites. The difference in perspective that being up in the air can give to a familiar stretch of coastline is quite stunning. Sometimes even regular coastal walkers have been stumped by some of my images of their regular routes.
More than a few times recently I have somehow managed to loose the control signal triggering the automatic ‘fly home’ function on the drone – while it’s great to know that the function really does work, it’s less than an awesome experience when you’re on a boat and you’ve moved a quarter-of-a-mile from the ‘home’ point!
Some of these aerial shots will soon be published in SCUBA magazine and also used in a lecture at a UNECSO Geopark conference in Torbay, highlighting some of the stunning geology that we have in this awe-inspiring part of the UK.
