1st Torbay Splash In

Recently I had the pleasure of judging the inaugural Torbay Splash In underwater photography competition alongside my friend and photo guru Peter Rowlands.

This event was almost single-handedly organised by Torbay BSAC‘s Richard Blair and I must admit he did a superb job too; setting out the rules, organising registration and image collection as well as arranging sponsorship and an evening social event at which the winners were announced.

A Splash In is an ‘on the day’ competition that means only images taken between certain times are eligible. Also, there was a limit of where entrants could dive or snorkel – this being within the limits of the Torbay Harbour authority (Petitor Point in the north to St.Mary’s Bay in the south).

For one the weather and in-water visibility were both really very good, and this was reflected in the images that were entered. Peter and I really enjoyed looking through those images during the judging process, and the audience who attended the evening ceremony did so too.

The evening event was at Torquay’s Living Coasts venue and it was a superb gathering of local divers and underwater photographers. With an amazing buffet and a location unbeaten for its views, everyone agreed the whole day had been a huge success and there is a great enthusiasm to see the competition repeated next year.

The event was covered by BSAC’s SCUBA magazine as pictured above.

I look forward to being involved in the 2018 competition!
